Sean Wilson has a strong background in technology, IT management, data, information systems and digital transformation, combining almost a decade of government IT experience with broader executive, commercial and product leadership.
He has managed technology across large organisations, spanning infrastructure, applications, databases, devices, cloud platforms, cybersecurity, integrations, digital products and reporting systems. His experience includes HR technology, SaaS platforms, customer relationship management, e-commerce, legal technology, AI-enabled business systems, enterprise GIS and infrastructure asset management.
Unlike technology leaders whose careers have remained within IT departments, Sean has also held CEO, Managing Director, COO and Commercial Director roles. He understands technology from both sides: the technical and operational requirements of delivering reliable systems, and the commercial accountability of ensuring those systems improve organisational capability, customer experience, decision-making and enterprise value.
He has led whole-of-organisation IT, developed and transformed business systems, worked with technical teams and vendors, and designed information structures that help organisations manage assets, deliver services, engage customers and support employees.
Proven Impact & Results
As Chief Technology & Product Officer at BetterHR for more than 10 years, Sean led technology strategy and the development of a national HR SaaS platform used by more than 60,000 users.
His work covered platform architecture, HR databases, employment law knowledge systems, workflow automation, dynamic document generation, payroll and API integrations, employee mobile applications, customer self-service, reporting and analytics.
He led more than 70 major technology and product initiatives, including a complete platform redesign and rebuild to improve stability, speed, data integrity and scalability. Other initiatives included white-labelling, new subscription tiers, a Compliance Register, Company Files, a Documents Library, enhanced personnel records, a Contract Wizard, dynamic HR process flowcharts, risk indicators, payroll features, employee portals and automated customer-care and advisory workflows.
He also directed improvements to security, including two-factor authentication, and helped move the business towards more scalable infrastructure and more efficient service delivery.
These initiatives supported the growth of the business to more than 60,000 users and 300+ partners. During Sean's tenure, revenue and gross profit doubled and share value increased by more than 150%.
Within the private-equity-backed Venturely Group, Sean held Group Executive and COO/CEO responsibilities, with oversight of technology resources and an in-house IT managed services team that included a CTO reporting to him.
The portfolio included multi-site retail, offices, workshops and operational facilities across NSW, SA, Queensland and Victoria. His responsibilities connected IT infrastructure, end-user technology, business applications, service delivery and operational change with the needs of the group's businesses.
He worked across shared services, business integration and operational improvement, ensuring technology and systems supported multi-site operations and group-level performance.
Sean spent almost 10 years in full-time government IT roles, managing technology operations and developing information systems to support public sector services.
His work included establishing a Geographic Information System from the ground up for local government, organisation-wide IT management, enterprise databases, infrastructure and property information, risk and compliance systems, asset management and technology modernisation.
He also worked with Sydney Water and a regional local government water authority on pipes, infrastructure and asset management. These environments required the integration of technical information, spatial data, engineering requirements and operational processes to support infrastructure planning and service delivery.
His government experience included leading organisation-wide adoption of PCs and other emerging technologies, as well as participation in boards and committees concerned with technology innovation, modernisation and structural reform.
At Sensis, part of Telstra, Sean held senior commercial and sales leadership roles in a large technology-enabled advertising and information services business.
His responsibilities included working across business and technology stakeholders, supporting digital platforms and coordinating customer requirements with service delivery. His leadership context included digital service performance, with 99.9% uptime delivered across digital platforms while meeting strict service-level agreements.
This experience reinforced the importance of reliable systems, service standards, commercial priorities and customer expectations in a large enterprise environment.
As Group CEO for the wider Zonda portfolio, Sean led businesses operating in healthcare staffing, recruitment and related services.
He strengthened financial reporting and operational visibility, addressed deficiencies in management information and helped improve decision-making across businesses experiencing losses and operational challenges.
His experience illustrates the importance of accurate data, consistent reporting and effective systems in workforce-intensive, multi-site businesses where service delivery, compliance and financial performance are closely connected.
Sean also operated his own IT business and has worked across enterprise IT, business systems, managed services and technology-enabled commercial operations. This adds a practical delivery perspective to his executive experience, including the relationship between technical requirements, customer needs, service standards and commercial viability.
Sean has worked extensively at the intersection of data, technology and business. He has created and maintained data dictionaries for complex operating environments, defining how data is structured, interpreted, related and used across systems.
His experience includes commercial data covering products, pricing, subscriptions, customer relationships and CRM; government data covering GIS, asset management and water supply engineering; and HR data covering employees, payroll and organisational structures.
He has also worked with large datasets, complex Excel models and API-based integrations, including REST interfaces. This requires understanding not just the technical structure of data, but its meaning, origin, quality, relationships and movement between systems.
His expertise includes:
Information architecture and data modelling.
Relational database design and enterprise databases.
Geographic information systems and spatial information.
Master data management and data dictionaries.
Data governance, data quality and information integrity.
API integration and systems interoperability.
Executive dashboards, reporting frameworks and business intelligence.
Analytics-enabled decision-making.
Infrastructure, asset and property information systems.
Risk, compliance and information governance.
Throughout his career, Sean has designed and overseen systems that support business growth and operational performance, including:
Sales and CRM platforms.
Customer lifecycle and subscription management.
Pricing and quoting systems.
Recruitment databases and workforce systems.
HR information systems and payroll integrations.
Legal information management systems.
Digital service delivery platforms.
Operational dashboards and performance reporting.
Workflow automation and customer self-service.
Cloud-based enterprise applications.
Knowledge management and advisory systems.
AI-assisted workflows and digital productivity tools.
His focus is on ensuring information is accurate, accessible and actionable, enabling organisations to improve productivity, reduce risk, deliver better service and make faster, better-informed decisions.
Sean has developed practical capability in using generative AI for research, analysis, problem-solving, strategy, communication, design and digital development.
He has hands-on experience with tools including ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Claude, applying them to real business tasks rather than treating AI as a technology exercise in itself.
His experience includes prompt engineering, critically evaluating AI-generated information, using AI to generate and troubleshoot HTML and other web code, embedding custom functionality into digital environments, and producing business communications, presentations, infographics and visual concepts.
He understands the importance of context, clear instructions, testing, iteration, identifying errors and recognising the limitations of large language models. His capability is principally focused on business application and practical adoption rather than presenting himself as a machine-learning engineer or specialist software developer.
Sean's technology experience spans strategy, IT operations, product development, data, governance, systems integration and digital transformation. His executive background means he understands how to prioritise technology investment, manage risk, work with technical specialists and align systems with organisational objectives.
He does not simply implement technology. He helps organisations develop the information capabilities, operating systems and digital products that improve decisions, strengthen performance and create long-term business value.
